Table of contents

Given that web spiders (those programs that are responsible for scanning the Internet to carry out automatic content indexing) base their work on analyzing the content of a website and then indexing it, it is necessary avoid certain elements that negatively affect said work and, therefore, negatively affect the SEO On Page or content.

In other words, it is worth paying special attention to certain practices that can penalize the SEO of a website.

Below we will list and explain some tips to improve the SEO On Page of a website.

Black hat SEO, penalties and traps

An important part and tip is to avoid black hat SEO, that is, practices whose objective is to fool the Google algorithm. We must pay attention to the following points if we want to avoid SEO penalties:

  • Duplicate content, whether intentional or not.
  • Hidden content. This practice consists of hiding content (for example by putting white text on a white background) and links with the aim of improving the prominence and density of words, Google is able to detect it.
  • Doorways pages consist of the creation of multiple similar pages that are created with the aim of redirecting traffic to a specific page. At first we may think that this will help us position ourselves for different keywords and redirect to really useful content but, again, Google is capable of detecting this practice.
  • Keyword stuffing or excess of keywords. As we explain in the article on SEO word density, a good practice is to repeat the keywords for which we want to position ourselves throughout a specific page and the entire website in general, however, we should not exceed this practice since Google may penalize us.

If you find a website that uses bad practices such as spam, poor quality, malware or phishing, do not hesitate to report the website to Google.

JavaScript, dynamic and static content

Spiders only index static content. If we think for a moment about the dynamic content generated by Javascript we will realize that it is obvious that it is not indexed, so a good tip to improve your seo is to avoid this practice.

An example of dynamic content is, for example, lists of recommended articles based on the logged-in user. If a web spider had to index that content, it would first have to know all the users and then make as many requests as there are users in the system to obtain the articles and be able to index them in the database of the specific search engine. This is obviously unfeasible.

Avoid popups or modals

This category is very similar to the previous one because it is actually dynamic content. Pop-ups only open when the user performs a specific action on the website, for example, clicking a certain button. For the spider to be able to access that content, it would first have to know which element to click on and then parse the HTML inside that modal. Like the previous one, it is unfeasible.

Do not use Adobe Flash Player

Although fortunately today it is no longer used as much, Adobe Flash Player penalizes SEO because it is dynamic content that is based on the user’s actions to display one information or another. This information will not be indexed either, so a good tip to improve your seo is to avoid Flash Player.

Login and password in content indexing

Anything behind a login and password is inaccessible to anyone without credentials, including spiders. Since you cannot access what is behind the login, the content will not be indexed. Avoid content behind a login if you want to improve your SEO.
